Two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr announced on Wednesday he would not run for president of the International Motoring Federation (FIA), paving the way for Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s re-election.
Sainz, the father of Formula One driver Carlos Sainz Jr, had mentioned last month that he was considering a bid for the position as head of motorsport’s governing body.
“I have finally decided not to run for the presidency of the FIA in this year’s election,” the 63-year-old Sainz posted on social media.
“I have worked diligently over the past few months to thoroughly understand the situation at the FIA and the demands and complexities of such an important role.
“After careful reflection, I have concluded that the current circumstances are not suitable for launching my candidacy.”
Sainz, a four-time Dakar Rally winner, also noted that he did not want his preparations for next year’s race to be disrupted by a bid for the FIA presidency.
As of now, there is no official opponent for the current FIA president, Ben Sulayem, in the December 12 election.
However, his presidency has been marked by controversy due to the resignations of several senior FIA staff and his decision to ban all swearing by F1 drivers.
