Mumbai University has climbed to the 664th position in the QS World Rankings 2026, with top scores in employment outcomes and steady progress toward the global top 500.

Mumbai University has shown a strong improvement in the QS World University Rankings 2026. It has climbed to the 664th position this year, up from the 711-720 range last year. Among Indian universities listed in the QS rankings, it now ranks 17th, moving up from 20th place.
The university received a high score for employment outcomes, showing that its graduates are doing well in the job market. Over the past five years, Mumbai University has steadily improved its performance in these global rankings.
Among traditional universities in India, it holds the second spot. However, the university scored low in areas like the faculty-student ratio this year.
The QS World Rankings were released on Wednesday. In Mumbai, IIT Bombay remains the top-ranked institution, securing the 129th position globally, though it dropped 11 places compared to last year.
Mumbai University (MU), in a statement released on Wednesday, described its latest QS World University Ranking as “historic” as it steadily moves closer to the top 500 global institutions.
According to the QS report, MU scored its highest—91 points—in employment outcomes, followed by citations per faculty (53.7), sustainability (41.3), and employer reputation (31.5). Notably, its employment outcomes score has seen a sharp rise from 70.5 last year to 91 this year, while the score for citations per faculty has nearly doubled.

However, the university received its lowest scores in areas like faculty-student ratio (4.7), international students (4.3), and international faculty (3.0). Despite being in single digits, MU noted improvement in these areas as well.
Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni credited the achievement to the collective efforts of all MU stakeholders in research and development.
“We are committed to reaching even higher ranks. Our newly launched University Department Ranking Framework will support this goal. With more international students, sustainable initiatives, and ongoing faculty recruitment, we expect even better results in future rankings,” he said.
