The film journey of Mithun Chakraborty, known as Bollywood’s disco dancer and ‘Dada’, has been longer than five decades. Mithun Chakraborty acted in more than 350 films. Mithun Chakraborty’s real name is Gaurang Chakraborty. Born on 16 June 1950 in Kolkata, Mithun was younger among two brothers. During the days of youth, he was inclined towards the Naxalite ideology. At that time the Naxal movement in Bengal was at a boom. After coming to the company of some people, Mithun left his family and joined the Naxal group.

Had to hide in fear of police action

When the police initiated action against the Naxalites, Mithun also had to underground with his companions. He kept hiding for several months.

Hungry stomach spent days in Mumbai

After returning home, Mithun thought of making a career in acting and for which he reached the Indian Film and Television Institute (FTII) in Pune. Acting studies were completed and he turned to Mumbai for work. Here the studios cut the rounds, but there was disappointment everywhere. The situation became so bad that he had to sleep on the hungry stomach pavement several times.

Mithun Chakraborty studied with Oriental Seminary and then a BSc degree from Scottish Church College, Kolkata.

In an interview to Indian Express, Mithun said, “I have spent such days when I had to sleep on the hungry stomach on the pavement. I used to sleep crying. Many times I used to think whether the next day would get food or not. Where will the sleeping where will be the next day. I have slept on the footpath for several days.”

Helen had changed his name to become assistant

Mithun did not get the hero, but got an opportunity to become an assistant to the famous actress Helen, while circling the film studio for several months. He took his name from Mithun as an assistant.

While assisting Helen, Mithun had to visit his sets of films. People came to know that Mithun has also learned acting, so he was given a small role in some films. These include the film two unknown. In some films, Mithun also worked as hero’s body double.

National Award for the first Hindi film ‘Mrigaya’

Mithun came in Hindi films from Mrinal Sen’s film ‘Mrigaya’. He received the National Award for Best Actor for the first film. In the year 1978, Mithun got stardom from the 1978 film protector and 1979 film security.

Mithun’s film ‘Mrigaya’ was based on Bhagwati Charan Panigrahi’s Odia Short Story ‘Hunting’.

Even after receiving the National Award, his son Mimoh Chakraborty told in an interview to Bollywood bubble in May 2025, regarding Mithun’s struggle, “When Papa received the National Award for his first film, a reporter was looking for him somewhere, because Papa was nothing at that time. He played a tribal in the film ‘Mrigaya’. He received the National Award for ‘Mrigaya’, but no one was able to find him.”

Mimoh Chakraborty further said, “Then the reporter found him and asked,” Are you the one who has received the award? ” Papa said, ‘Yes sir, I am the one.’ The reporter said, ‘I want your interview.’ So Papa laid the condition – first feed me, then I will give an interview, think that after winning the National Award for my first film, this was the demand – ‘Give me food’.

Mithun gets a big identity from ‘disco dancer’

He got a big success in Mithun’s film career from the 1982 film ‘Disco Dancer’. It was the first film of Hindi cinema to earn 100 crores worldwide. The special thing was that its collection was more than India with the Soviet Union. Mithun was a non -dancer, but when he danced according to the need of the film, his steps became famous all over the country.

The film ‘Disco Dancer’ also featured Mithun Chakraborty along with Kim Yashpal, Om Puri, Geeta Siddharth and Karan Razdan.

After this, he became a top star in the films Kasam Kasam Kasam Ki (1984), Commando (1988), Pyaar Jhorati (1985), slavery (1985), I want justice (1983), Ghar Ek Temple (1984), Sundar (1986) from heaven to Sundar (1986) and Pyaar Ka Mandir (1988).

Mithun’s 17 films were released simultaneously in 1989. These include films like ‘Allaka’, ‘Mujrim’, ‘Prem Pratoy’, ‘Battle’, ‘Guru’ and ‘Twenty Years’. Mithun has the world record of being the most Bollywood actor in a year.

Mithun Chakraborty married Helen Luke in 1979. This marriage could last only for 4 months.

Mithun’s first wife Helena Luke was an actress who became famous by playing the role of Lady Helena in Amitabh Bachchan’s film ‘Mard’.

Mithun got married to Yogita Bali this year as soon as he left his first wife. They have three sons Mimoh, Namashi, Ushmarh.

Yogita Bali is a former Indian Bollywood actress. He married Mithun Chakraborty in 1979.

Mithun has also adopted a girl found in a garbage heap, which she has named Dishani. Dishani made two short films ‘Holi Smoke!’ And acted in ‘Underpass’ and also appeared in a Hollywood short film ‘The Guest’.

Name associated with Sridevi while getting married

Mithun Chakraborty and late actress Sridevi’s relationship was in discussion for a long time. According to the Times of India report, the two met on the set of the film ‘Jaga Laka Mana’ (1984). It was here that his affair started.

Mithun and Sridevi worked in films like ‘Jagat Hakan’, ‘Guru’, ‘Time Ki Awaaz’ and ‘Watan Ke Rakhwale’.

At the same time, actress Sajta Mehta had said in an interview to YouTube channel Hindi Rush about Sridevi and Mithun’s relationship, “You can say that the breakup broke Sri (Sridevi). They both loved each other very much, I believe so. They had married, they say that?”

According to the news of the Times of India, however, Mithun was already married to Yogita Bali. When Yogita came to know about this relationship, he attempted suicide. Mithun then distanced Sridevi and returned to her family. Sridevi was broken by this breakup. When he realized that Mithun would not leave his wife, he ended the relationship in 1988.

In an interview to Telegraph, Yogita Bali said, “Even if he gets a second marriage, I will accept it.”

Mithun Chakraborty received threats from Dawood due to Mandakini

According to a Times of India report, Mithun and Mandakini’s onscreen pair were well -liked in the 1980s. Meanwhile, rumors erupted that there is a personal relationship between the two. These reports reached Dawood Ibrahim, which was reported close to Mandakini. Dawood threatened Mithun. Constant phone calls and warnings of killing started.

Mithun Chakraborty and Mandakini acted in films like ‘Hawalat’, ‘Commando’, ‘Jeete Hain Shaan Se’, Dushman, ‘Battle’ and ‘Fantastic’.
