An ICICI Bank relationship manager from the Kota branch allegedly swindled nearly Rs 4.58 crore from customers’ accounts and subsequently lost the funds in the stock market. Identified as Sakshi Gupta, the accused was arrested earlier this week and is currently in judicial custody.
She was employed as a relationship manager at ICICI Bank’s DCM branch.
Over the past two and a half years, the woman stole crores from over 110 bank accounts belonging to 41 customers, investing the stolen funds in the stock market, where they were lost.
The incident came to light following a complaint filed by branch manager Tarun Dadich at the Udhyog Nagar Police Station on 18 February. The complaint alleged that Gupta had stolen Rs 4.58 crore from customers’ accounts.
Based on Dadich’s complaint, Sakshi was arrested on 31 May.
The investigation revealed that she linked customers’ accounts to her relatives’ mobile numbers, preventing customers from receiving OTPs and remaining unaware of the transactions.
According to Sub-Inspector Ibrahim, the accused cleverly transferred money into various accounts. In one instance, she used the account of an elderly woman (unaware of its use) as a central account to accumulate the stolen money. In 2023 alone, she transferred over Rs 3 crore into that account.
He also stated that Sakshi misused debit cards, PINs, and OTPs to execute these illicit transfers.
She activated overdraft facilities on 40 customer accounts without their consent, prematurely closed fixed deposits in 31 customers’ accounts, and transferred approximately Rs 1.34 crore from them.
She also frequently took out personal loans of Rs 3.40 lakh in her own name.
She was arrested on 31 May from her parental home in Rawatbhata, Chittorgarh district, and remanded to judicial custody after one day of interrogation.
In response to the incident, an ICICI Bank spokesperson stated in a press release, “The interests of our customers are of paramount importance to us. Immediately upon discovering the fraudulent activity, we filed an FIR with the police. We have a zero-tolerance policy against any fraudulent activity and thus suspended the employee involved. We would like to reassure that genuine claims of impacted customers have been settled.”
