The Income Tax Department has not yet announced any official date, but according to reports, the process can start from the first week of June 2025.

The Tax Department has extended the last date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) of FY 2025 from 31 July to 15 September 2025. The process of ITR filing can start from the first week of June. It usually starts from April 1, but this year it is delayed. Due to the delay, online tools required for ITR form are not available.

CA Anand Jain said- “This expansion is a welcome step because today on 27 May 2025, the facility of filing ITR on the tax portal is not available till 5 pm. In many cases, Annuel Information Statements ie AIS is also not getting properly. So it will give relief to both Extension Professionals and Taxpayers.”

Understand and impact due to delay of ITR filing…

Question 1: Why is ITR filing delayed this year?

answer: This year, the main reason for the delay in the process of ITR filing is not available for ITR form, not available online related facilities.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes i.e., CBDT has notified all forms from ITR-1 to ITR-7, but required online tools such as JSON, Excel, and online e-filing utilities are not yet on the portal.

Experts believe that this delay may be due to changes made in the forms, backnd technology upgrades and data integration (eg with AIS and TIS).

Question 2: When will the process of ITR filing start?

answer: The Income Tax Department has not yet announced any official date, but according to reports, the process can start from the first week of June 2025.

The rollout will be in a phased manner, in which the first simple forms such as ITR-1 and ITR-4 will be launched, followed by complex forms such as ITR-2 and ITR-3.

Question 3: What are e-filing utilities and why are they so important?

answer: E-Filing Utilities are the software tools that the Income Tax Department gives to the taxpayers to file their returns. These are two types:

  • Online utility: It is mostly used by salaried people such as individual taxpayers. It contains pre-filled data such as salary, interest, income and TDS.
  • Json and excel utilities: These tax professionals use, where the data is filled offline and uploaded on the portal.

It is not possible to file returns without these tools, as these data are necessary for validation, form submission and system integration.

Question 4: What is the effect of this delay on taxpayers?

answer: Those who are expecting a quick refund have to wait. For example, those who have more TDS or advanced tax are waiting for the filing for refund to start.

Question 5: What will happen if not filed on time?

answer: If there was no return file by 15 September 2025, then there will be a penalty of Rs 1,000 for those with income less than 5 lakh and Rs 5,000 for those with more than 5 lakh income.

At the same time, outstanding tax will be charged 1% monthly interest under section 234A. Business or capital loss will not be carried forward next year, except for house property.
