University of Liverpool India Campus: The upcoming campus in Bengaluru will aim to offer world-class education aligned with both Indian and global standards.
University of Liverpool has officially received a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a campus in India.
In a significant development for transnational education, the University of Liverpool today became the second UK university, after the University of Southampton, to officially receive a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a campus in India. The handover ceremony, held at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, was presided over by Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan. Dr Vineet Joshi, Interim Chair of the UGC and Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, was also present at the event.
This milestone marks a major step toward strengthening academic collaboration, fostering research partnerships, and enhancing global educational exchange between India and the UK. The upcoming campus in Bengaluru will aim to offer world-class education aligned with both Indian and global standards.
During the Letter of Intent (LOI) handover ceremony with the University of Liverpool, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Today, the number of students in India is 300 million. Out of that, 40 million are in higher education… We have more than 1200 universities and 50,000 colleges… But GER (Gross Enrolment Ratio) is around 26-27%. The recommendation of the National Education Policy 2020 is to take it to 50% in the next 5 years. Today, India is the 4th largest economy in the world. We have a target given by PM Modi. By 2047, India will have to be a developed nation… If you want to have the ambition to be a developed nation, we have to implement the National Education Policy. One of the primary recommendations of the NEP… We have to look beyond the horizon. We have to become global. We can’t function in isolation..”

The University of Liverpool’s new campus in Bengaluru is a landmark achievement, deepening the links between our innovators and academics for years to come. Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, said, “We are delighted to have received approval from the University Grants Commission to open Bengaluru’s first international campus. The Indian government’s ambition to significantly increase enrolment in higher education is visionary and we are excited to be developing plans to play our part.”

The University of Liverpool was originally established as University College, Liverpool in 1881.
