A Bombardier CRJ-200 plane of Saurya Airlines crashed after taking off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Authorities on Thursday (25 July) recovered the black box of the plane that crashed in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on 24 July. The Bombardier CRJ-200 plane of Saurya Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from Tribhuvan International Airport.

18 of the 19 people on board the plane have died. The dead include two crew members, technical staff of the airline, a family of 3 members including a 4-year-old child. Nepal Civil Aviation Authority Deputy Director General Hans Raj Pandey said that the recovered black box has been handed over to the investigation team for further action.

The investigation team of the plane crash accident is being led by former Director General of Civil Aviation Authority Ratish Chandra Lal. This team also includes 4 experts. The team will have to submit its investigation report to the authority within 45 days.

Hans Raj Pandey also said that post-mortem of all the bodies has been done. Now they are being identified. All the bodies will be handed over to the families on 26th July. Captain Manish Raj Shakya, the only survivor of the plane crash, is undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College. His condition is said to be stable. Hospital sources said that Manish is admitted in ICU. He is able to speak.

Eyewitnesses said – there was a jolt as soon as it took off, then it crashed
Eyewitnesses present at the scene told Kathmandu Post that the plane was taking off from the southern end of the runway. Suddenly it jerked and caught fire. After this, it fell into a pit between the Buddha Air hangar and the radar station on the eastern side of the runway.

According to the website of Saurya Airlines, the company operates flights to 5 destinations in Nepal. They have 3 Bombardier CRJ-200 jets.

3 people of the same family died, including a 4 year old child
Three members of the same family have died in this accident. In a statement issued by the airlines, it has been said that flight maintenance Manuraj Sharma was travelling with his wife Priya Khatiwada and four-year-old son Adhiraj Sharma. All three died in this accident. According to reports, 17 people who died in the accident were staff of Saurya Airlines.

There have been 12 plane crashes in Nepal in 14 years
The air industry in Nepal has grown a lot in the last few years. It is providing services even in many difficult and mountainous areas. However, accidents happen here often due to poor safety system and lack of training.

On an average, one plane crash occurs every year in Nepal. Since 2010, 12 plane crashes have occurred. A major plane crash occurred here on 14 January 2023. The Yeti Airlines plane crashed in Pokhara, 205 km from Kathmandu. It was an ATR-72 plane, carrying 68 passengers and four crew members.

The plane collided with a hill just 10 seconds before landing at Pokhara International Airport. This caused the plane to catch fire and it fell into a ditch. All 72 people died in the accident. Earlier on May 29, 2022, an airplane crashed in Mustang district. 22 people died in this accident.

In 2018, a US-Bangla Airlines plane crashed near Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu. 51 people died in this, while 20 were seriously injured. Seeing the frequent plane accidents in Nepal, the European Union has banned Nepalese carriers in its airspace.
