India on Thursday is conducting a massive civil defence mock drill, named ‘Operation Abhyas’, starting at 4 p.m. across 244 districts, including Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Visakhapatnam, among others.
Organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the drill is aimed at testing emergency response systems in hospitals, schools, and government offices. The objective is to strengthen emergency preparedness, with activities including orderly evacuations, taking shelter under desks, and switching off electrical appliances when the siren sounds.
The drill has been conducted on the instructions of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which had directed all states and Union Territories to organise such exercises in response to the “new and complex threats” following the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people — including 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen — were killed.
The exercise also comes amid heightened security measures, after the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes early Wednesday on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘Operation Sindoor’, in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack.
In the national capital, students and teachers across Delhi took part in the drill. It is being conducted at 55 locations across the city, with support from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), civil defence volunteers, home guards, and youth groups such as the NCC, NSS, and NYKS.

Visuals from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar railway station showed a mock drill simulating emergency responses to bomb blasts and fires. The exercise trained citizens in evacuation procedures, first aid, and fire control measures.

In Kolkata, evacuation drills were also carried out at four private schools — DPS Ruby Park, La Martiniere for Boys, La Martiniere for Girls, and Future Foundation School. A spokesperson for the two La Martiniere schools said the drills were conducted by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) wings, based on instructions from the government.
