The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday directed several states to conduct civil defence mock drills on May 7 to assess preparedness in the event of a hostile attack. The directive comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attacks where terrorists based out of and trained in Pakistan killed 26 civilians, almost all of them tourists who were visiting Pahalgam’s Baisaran.
The drills will involve the operationalisation of air raid warning sirens across selected areas to test public alert systems. Alongside this, civilians, including students, will be trained on how to respond during emergencies such as aerial strikes or bombings.
An updated evacuation plan will be rolled out and rehearsed to ensure timely and safe movement of people in case of emergencies.
