Former Prime Minister of the country Dr. Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night at the age of 92.
After the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, there has been controversy regarding his funeral and memorial. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Modi requesting him to perform the last rites only where a memorial could be built.
On this, the Home Ministry said late on Friday night, ‘Nigambodh Ghat has been chosen for the last rites. The memorial of former PM will be built in Delhi. A suitable place will be found for this and a trust will be formed. The process will take time.
Congress sources said that Dr. Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur wanted the last rites to take place where a memorial could be built.
Congress leader KC Venugopal said- The government could not even find land to build a memorial of the former PM. This is an insult to the country’s first Sikh PM.
When it came to shortage of space, Priyanka Gandhi suggested building Dr. Singh’s memorial near Shakti Sthal (Indira Gandhi’s memorial) or Veerbhoomi (Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial).

Kharge wrote a letter to PM Modi. Congress shared this on its X handle.
Congress said – the funeral should be at a place where no former PM’s funeral has ever taken place.
According to the Times report, Congress has also raised objection regarding the last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. Congress said that the last rites should also be held at a place where no former PM’s last rites had ever been performed. Because no one is equal to the stature of former PM Manmohan Singh.
BJP said- Congress never gave respect to Dr. Singh, now it is doing politics.
- BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the NDA government is fully committed to giving due respect to Dr. Singh. Yesterday it was decided in the cabinet that a memorial and mausoleum will be built in the memory of Manmohan Singh. The Congress party has been informed about this.
- Sudhanshu Trivedi said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has told Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge that whatever time it takes after the completion of the processes like land acquisition, formation of trust, that work will be done in a proper manner and as soon as possible.
- Sudhanshu Trivedi said that Congress never gave respect to Dr. Singh. Today she is still doing politics even after his death. Dr. Singh was the first Prime Minister outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to hold the post of PM for 10 years. Today, in this hour of sorrow, politics should be avoided. PM Modi’s government has risen above party sentiments and given respect to all the leaders.
Question from center to 4 leaders on monument dispute

- Navjot Singh Sidhu: When a person leaves, all the hatred disappears with him. But politics is happening here. This issue is of the history of the country. This person was special, he was a living history. Knowing what is right and not doing it is cowardice. Must have a big heart.
- Akhilesh Yadav: The tradition of respect should be followed in the context of the former Prime Minister. BJP should not set an inappropriate example.
- Sanjay Singh: Not giving a place near Rajghat for the last rites of the only Prime Minister coming from the Sikh community shows the small thinking of the government.
- Sukhbir Singh Badal: The place for Dr. Singh’s memorial should be Rajghat. The established practice and tradition followed in the past should be kept in mind.
