Union Minister Hardeep Puri has responded to Shashi Tharoor regarding the George Soros case. Tharoor had said on December 15 that he had met Soros at Hardeep Puri’s house in America.
Responding to this, Hardeep Puri said on Friday – I was the ambassador at that time. Shashi Tharoor was the Minister of State for External Affairs in the UPA government. It was he who gave me the list of guests for the dinner program.
In fact, on December 8, BJP had accused the Gandhi family of taking funds from the foundation of American industrialist George Soros. Also said that anti-India Soros and Congress together want to destroy India’s economy.
After this, MP Shashi Tharoor’s 2009 post on X went viral, in which he had written – Met old friend Soros. He is not only an investor but also a concerned citizen of the world.
Responding to this same post, Tharoor said on December 15-
This meeting took place at the house of Hardeep Puri (Union Minister). He was my friend only in the social sense. I did not take even a single rupee from him. After this post I met him once more. This meeting took place at a dinner party at Hardeep Puri’s house.
Tharoor’s clarification in 3 points
- Tharoor said on December 15 – There is a lot of talk about this tweet of 2009. I knew Soros well. I met him during my UN days. They were friends only in a social sense. I have never taken a single penny for myself from him or any of his foundations.
- It was only after this tweet that I met Soros once again. Was on a visit to New York as Minister of State for External Affairs. The then Ambassador Hardeep Puri had invited several prominent Americans to discuss dinner with me. Since then I have not been in touch with Soros. My old relationship never had any political meaning.
- I hope the matter will become clear now. People are making absurd allegations on the basis of 15 year old tweet. However, that is how the troll factory works.
Hardeep Puri’s answer, 4 points…
- I welcomed Tharoor at a briefing breakfast on 11 October 2009 and again at a dinner on 12 October 2009. I was the ambassador. He was the Minister of State for External Affairs.
- I didn’t choose the list of people invited to dinner. This was given to me by the then minister Tharoor. I saw Soros’ name in the list. This was the only time in my life that I met Soros.
- After this post of Tharoor dated 15 December 2024, I called him. I thought I would tell him the whole matter, but he did not pick up the phone.
- Now I understand why Tharoor wanted to meet him. Soros was one of the beneficiaries of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
BJP’s allegation- Soros and Congress are anti-India On December 8, BJP had accused Congress that former Congress President Sonia Gandhi is associated with an organization which advocates separation of Kashmir from India. BJP said on social media platform The name of this organization is Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP). Sonia is its co-chairperson (CO).

George Soros has called PM Modi anti-democratic George Soros was born on August 12, 1930 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. George is accused of running an agenda to influence the politics and society of many countries of the world. Soros’s organization ‘Open Society Foundation’ entered India for the first time in 1999.
In 2014, it began funding organizations that improve medicine, the justice system, and help people with disabilities in India. In 2016, the Government of India banned funding through this institution in the country.
George’s statement to the Munich Security Council in August 2023 was highly discussed. When he had said that India is a democratic country, but Prime Minister Modi is not democratic. The main reason for his fast becoming a big leader is the violence done against Muslims.
George is accused of running an agenda to influence the politics and society of many countries of the world.
Soros also gave controversial statements on CAA, 370 Soros had also targeted PM Modi on the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA in India and the removal of Article 370 from Kashmir. Soros had said on both the occasions that India was moving towards becoming a Hindu nation. On both the occasions, his statements were very harsh and he was seen attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
