United States President-elect Donald Trump feels India charges a lot of tariffs and has reiterated his intention to impose reciprocal tariffs in retaliation during the import of certain American products.
“It’s reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us, and we tax them. And they tax us again. In most cases, they’re taxing us, but we haven’t been taxing them,” Trump told reporters.
He made these comments in response to a question about a possible trade agreement with China. Trump pointed out that countries like India and Brazil impose high tariffs on certain US products.
“The term ‘reciprocal’ is key. If a country like India charges us 100%, should we charge them nothing in return? They send us a bicycle, and we send them one too. They charge us 100, and 200. India charges a lot. Brazil charges a lot. If they want to charge us, that’s fine, but we’re going to charge them the same,” Trump said during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago.
In response to a question, his Commerce Secretary nominee, Howard Lutnick, stated that “reciprocity” will be a central focus for the Trump administration. “How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated,” he said.
