The 13-day government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a story which is a wonderful example of Indian democracy. This story is an example of principles and honesty. No party got majority in the 1996 general elections. BJP won 161 seats and emerged as the largest party. President Shankar Dayal Sharma, following the constitutional tradition, invited BJP to form the government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took oath as Prime Minister, but BJP was far away from the 272 seats required for majority. Despite all efforts, only a few allies were found to support him, and BJP could reach only 194 seats. While proving majority in the Lok Sabha, the opposition taunted him, but Atal ji was firm on his decision. His speech silenced everyone, and he said, ‘We bow before numerical strength, but will not retreat from the objective of nation building.’ This speech made Atal ji the leader of the people, but after this, his government fell in just 13 days. The era of coalition governments began from here, which continues till today. See this report.
