Barcelona boss Hansi Flick was visibly frustrated when he was sent off in the second half of the away LaLiga game against Real Betis on December 7. The event unfolded in the 68th minute when Real Betis were awarded a penalty. Victor Roque won the spot kick for the hosts after being fouled by Frankie de Jong just inside the box. The on-field referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz initially considered it to be a fair challenge but later overturned his decision, consulting with the video assistants. De Jong picked up a yellow card for his untimely tackle while Flick was shown a straight red. Giovani Lo Celso converted the penalty for Real Betis to make it one-all.
Once given the marching order, the Barcelona head coach was captured engaging in an animated chat with the match referee on the sidelines. Each team scored one goal later in the game which ended in a 2-2 draw. During the post-match presser, Flick strongly questioned his red card, claiming, “I didn’t say anything to anyone, it was just my reaction.”
Now, a video of the incident has emerged on social media. In the footage, Flick was seen making a hand gesture towards the referee after Real Betis was given the penalty. That behaviour perhaps didn’t go down well with Alejandro Muniz Ruiz.
The official stated in his report, “Flick was sent off for leaving the technical area shouting and gesticulating, protesting one of my decisions.” Considering the complaints, the Spanish federation has handed Flick a two-match ban. Barcelona are appealing against his “unjust” red card as the club believes the manager said nothing directly to the on-field referee, as reported by Marca.
About his sent-off, Flick said, “It took me a long time to decide whether it was a penalty or not. If you need that much time, it could be a question of doubt. I’m not proud. It’s never happened to me before. But maybe it’s something from here. I was angry with myself, not with anyone.”
In this regard, Article 127 of the Spanish Federation’s Disciplinary Code says– “Protesting to the main referee, assistants or the fourth official, provided that it does not constitute a more serious offence, will be sanctioned with a suspension of two to three matches or for a period of up to one month.”
If Barcelona’s appeal doesn’t work, Hansi Flick will remain sidelined in the last two LaLiga games of this year. After their Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund, the Catalan side will face Leganes in an away game on December 16 before hosting Atletico Madrid on December 21.
