Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal was taken into custody by Punjab Police from Khanauri border on the morning of 26 November. He stayed in DMC Hospital, Ludhiana for about 96 hours. Dainik Bhaskar After reaching Khanauri border, he talked to farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and learned that his
.
Dallewal claimed that he was scared when police officers came to take him into custody. They were afraid that other farmers might come and they might clash. That’s why they didn’t even let me wear clothes and made me sit in the car.
To break the fast, police officers kept coming to the hospital with tea and snacks, but I continued my fast. My blood pressure was not even checked there. Kept in a room to create mental pressure. Not allowed to meet anyone. The government thought that if only one farmer sat on a fast, they would pick him up, but another farmer also started the fast. Due to this the government had to bow down.

Question: What was going on in your mind when the police came to take you into custody on 26 November? Dallewal: Our meeting continued till one o’clock in the night. That’s why I reached my trolley late. Everyone was tired. When everyone slept then the policemen came. They locked the outside of the tents so that no one could go out. After that the policemen came to my cabin. My cabin is normal, so as to avoid wind and cold.
That cabin was demolished by the policemen in 2 minutes. What hurt me more was that I was not even allowed to wear shoes and pyjama. I later came to know that the police were scared of the farmers. There was a fear in the minds of the police that if they had taken even a little more time, the farmers would have come there. There could have been a clash between police and farmers.
I myself heard that senior police officers were abusing their younger employees that they should board the vehicles quickly and do not waste time. Get out of here as quickly as you can. I myself was surprised that the behavior of the police while picking me up from the trolley was different. After being seated in the car his behavior changed.

Question: Why did not Ludhiana take Rajindra Hospital of Patiala instead of DMC Hospital? Was that hospital nearby? Dallewal: Look, when I was taken from Khanauri border, the police had orders to take me to DMC hospital in Ludhiana instead of Patiala. From here went to Sangrur and then reached DMC hospital. All the policemen went talking on the way. My mistake was that I could not send a message to my friends that the police had taken me into custody and taken me to DMC hospital. I didn’t even have a mobile.
Farmer friends came to know at 6 in the morning that I was in DMC hospital. The officers made me talk to my farmer friend uncle at 6 in the morning. I had told them not to worry, my fast is continuing. I will not break the fast. I am sad that journalists were not allowed to meet me, whereas no one can stop journalists from meeting me. If any of my friends or relatives came to meet me, he was turned away from outside.
During the emergency, such conditions were created that even if a relative of another patient came inside, he was not allowed to bring his mobile inside. The police were in panic.
Question: Why did the police raid at midnight? what do you understand? Dallewal: The call we had given to go on hunger strike is our strong action. The special thing about this is that after the death of the partner who is on fast, the other partner will immediately go on fast. Unless our demands are met, the last rites of the deceased farmer will not be performed. The government is deeply worried about this.
This is our demand with the central government. The state government has nothing to do with this. I believe that the Punjab government has taken this action at the behest of the Centre, which is highly condemnable.
Question: You had said that the Punjab government is working together with the BJP, what are the reasons for this? Dallewal: Punjab government has proved this not once but many times. First of all, when young farmer Shubhakaran was martyred on the Khanauri border, an FIR was lodged after keeping the dead body on the road for 6 days. It was already known that the government was standing with those who killed us, but now after this incident it became even more clear.
If Punjab and Haryana governments are really farmer friendly then they should have put pressure on the central government to give MSP to the farmers, otherwise the water level of the earth will continuously fall. In future people will not get water to drink. The government tried to damage our movement.

Question: Did tea and breakfast come for you in DMC hospital?
Dallewal: It has happened many times that when I was in the emergency cabin, the police officer came with tea on the very first day. He said, Pradhanji, take tea. I told him, look, I am on a fast. He was putting pressure on Pradhanji and saying that the fast has not started yet.
I told the police officers that the moment you picked me up from the front, my fast had started. The policemen kept bringing something to eat and drink. Many senior officers also kept coming round to serve tea, but I had clearly told them that I would neither eat nor drink anything.
Question: The doctors of DMC Hospital claimed that they kept checking you? Dallewal: My question to those doctors is that if you had to do my checkup then why did you not allow the journalists to reach there. What was the problem that the press was not allowed to come near me? My friends were not allowed to reach me. The doctors are all lying. I request that the doctor who issued the statement regarding my health and the police officers should also be included in the live debate. We will clear that thing also.
Nurses used to come there to check my BP. She used to say that Bapuji should check his BP. So I used to tell them that there is no need to check my BP, I am absolutely fine. My BP was not even checked in the hospital.

Question: How did you feel when you stayed in the same cabin in the hospital for 4 days? Dallewal: See, I was in the isolation ward. The purpose of sending him to that ward is that there will be a single person there. Only then will he be weak from inside somewhere. The police probably had no idea that the man whom they had brought had spent his entire life in these activities. What mental pressure will we be able to put on such a person?
5 policemen sitting in the cabin near me were themselves realizing that something was going wrong. All those who work in the police are children of farmers and labourers. Everyone’s feelings are associated with our movement. Everyone is under pressure of orders. Some policemen were on duty at night and some were on duty during the day. I kept talking with him for many hours.
His conversations with me ended when I fell asleep. The policemen themselves were saying, Baba Ji, when will this end? When will he leave you? I told him to ask this to his officers. This movement will continue till our last breath.
Question: Within 96 hours the police and the government bowed down and had to release you. What do you think is the reason for this? Dallewal: A big call had been given by the farmers. It was announced to burn the effigies of Bhagwant Singh Mann and Arvind Kejriwal across the country. It was announced to surround the house of Bhagwant Mann. 30-40 buses were ready from each block. Even if 30 buses come from one of my blocks, then imagine that we have 18 districts with us. 4 to 5 blocks work with us in every district.
Our comrades maintained their position. My friends extended the fast with courage. When Sukhjit went on a fast, the government had to come on the backfoot.

Question: What to do if tear gas shells are fired while going to Delhi on foot? Dallewal: Now government ministers are saying that farmers can go to Delhi peacefully. They are saying that if you want to go on foot, you can go. On the other hand, the Supreme Court committee is also telling us that you can go on foot. If farmers are still tortured or tear gas shells or bullets are fired, then the government’s intentions towards the farmers will become clear.
If you need ration or anything else on the way, there is no need to worry. Farmers and people of Haryana are with us. There is no problem of any kind with food. The number of farmers on the front is now increasing continuously.
