By July 2012, Aleppo was divided into two parts, one part of which was under the control of the Free Syrian Army and the other under the control of Bashar al-Assad. The countries that helped the government included Russia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Pakistan.

At the same time, the rebels were getting help from America, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. All the beautiful artefacts, mosques and cultural heritage for which the city was known were lost in government air strikes.
