Why the hesitation: During the study, 2400 participants, including Canadian university students, were asked about friends they had lost touch with, and 91% admitted to having lost touch with. However, most of them seemed less inclined to reconnect.

Their biggest worry was that the old friend might not be interested in the conversation and it would feel weird to talk after a long time. Some worry that their friend might think they have been forced upon them. They are also doubtful about the friend’s reaction. However, according to the study, this worry is baseless. The reality is that old friends like to listen to us.

Overcoming reluctance: Psychologist Lara Aknin at Simon Fraser University in Canada says, ‘People who overcame their reluctance and contacted old friends felt more happiness and satisfaction. Its importance will be understood only when we try to connect with our whole heart.’

Strategy to reconnect: Gillian Sandstrom, professor of psychology at the University of Sussex, says, “Start by sending messages to friends you occasionally talk to. This builds confidence. It’s a kind of warm-up practice.”

It can be helpful to just send a ‘Hi’ message without thinking too much. Think positively that the friend will be happy to talk to you. Do not expect an immediate response. Restarting the contact is a big initiative in itself. To keep the message more close, you can share an old incident or memory.

Not so difficult: According to the study, connecting with forgotten friends strengthens your social circle. It is not as difficult as we think. Reconnecting with old friends can create new relationships that enrich your life and theirs. Friends help us more than we expect. They bring life to relationships, providing both emotional support and shared happiness.
