The Italian police has arrested two other Indians on charges of keeping Indians as slaves. Rs 4.17 crore has also been recovered from them. The police suspects that the two accused had brought Indians to Italy by luring them with good salaries. The money recovered from them was what they got by providing labour at cheap rates.

Fake work permit given after taking 15 lakh rupees
According to the report, the 33 rescued Indians had paid Rs 15.45 lakh to go to Italy and obtain work permits there. Despite this, the work permits given to them were fake. Police said that Rs 11.78 crore more was taken from many Indians. In return, they were lured with the promise of permanent work permits.

According to CNN, the two accused had also snatched the passports of the Indian workers so that they could not escape from Italy. They were kept in an old, dilapidated house. They were also threatened to be killed if they tried to escape from the house.

The police said that they are trying to establish links between the accused and companies providing cheap labour in Italy. The Indian Embassy in Italy said that they have been informed about the case. They are working with the Italian authorities to ensure the safety of Indians.

An Indian working on a farm in Italy died
Actually, an Indian farmer died in Italy last month while working on a farm. While cutting grass in the field, 30-year-old Satnam’s hand was cut off by a machine. It was alleged that instead of helping him after the incident, his owner left him alone on the roadside near his house.

After this incident, the police came into action. A case was registered against Satnam’s employer. The family of Indian worker Satnam had pleaded to the Italian administration and PM Meloni for justice.

One-fourth of the people working on farms are victims of human trafficking
Cases of labour trafficking have been reported in Italy earlier as well. In 2018, the Italian police had said that one-fourth of the labourers working on farms in the country were trafficked. They are operated through a gang.

According to CNN, 11% of workers in Italy work through the black market. They are not registered. All these workers and their employers do not pay taxes, which encourages human trafficking.

According to the data of January 2023, more than 1 lakh 67 thousand Indians live in Italy. In 2023, there were 8 thousand Indian workers here. By 2025, this number will cross 12 thousand. In December last year, India passed Italy’s migration agreement. Under this, India will send 20 thousand workers to Italy every year.
