Only last month, Mauritius had gained control of the disputed Chagos Islands from Britain. He was also trying to capitalize on this in the elections, but his party got embroiled in a big controversy.

A YouTube channel named ‘Missy Mustas’ leaked phone tapes of the country’s top leaders, lawyers, officials and journalists in October. There were many revelations in the leaked tape. One famous case was that of a police officer who asked a forensic doctor to change the report of a man who died due to custodial beating.

This caused great embarrassment to the government. Although Jugnauth Sarkar said that these recordings are not genuine, they have been prepared with the help of AI. After this, social media was banned in the entire country on 31 October. This ban continued till 11 November.
