Parliamentary elections were held in Mauritius on 10 November. According to Mauritius news website Le Mauritian, Labor Party leader and former Prime Minister Naveen Ramgoolam has won. At the same time, Socialist Movement, the party of current Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, has not been able to get even a single seat.
PM Modi on Monday congratulated Naveen Ramgoolam for his historic victory in the Mauritius parliamentary elections and invited him to visit India. Modi said he looked forward to working together to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
Last month, some audio tapes went viral on social media in Mauritius. In this, many allegations related to corruption were made against the government. This created a negative atmosphere in the country due to which the party suffered huge losses in the elections.
Pravind Jugnauth had reached the polling booth with his wife Kovita on Sunday to vote.
What is BLS system in Mauritius where the losing party is made MP?
There are 70 seats in the Parliament of Mauritius. But elections are held only on 62 seats. In this election, Ramgoolam’s Labor Party’s ‘Alliance du Change’ alliance has won 62 seats.
At the same time, Jugnauth’s alliance Lelep has not got a single seat. Another party ‘OPR’ has won 2 seats.
People of Indian origin are in majority in Mauritius. At the time of independence, people there were worried that people of Indian origin would always dominate the Parliament and the rest would not be able to share in power. To address their concerns, the Better Loser System (BLS) was adopted in Mauritius. Under this, people from backward communities are given representation on 8 seats.

Jugnauth was the Prime Minister of the country since 2017. His father made him PM in his place. After this he won the elections in 2019. Only last month, Mauritius had gained control of the disputed Chagos Islands from Britain. He was also trying to capitalize on this in the elections, but his party got embroiled in a big controversy.
A YouTube channel named ‘Missy Mustas’ leaked phone tapes of the country’s top leaders, lawyers, officials and journalists in October. There were many revelations in the leaked tape. One famous case was that of a police officer who asked a forensic doctor to change the report of a man who died due to custodial beating.
This caused great embarrassment to the government. Although Jugnauth Sarkar said that these recordings are not genuine, they have been prepared with the help of AI. After this, social media was banned in the entire country on 31 October. This ban continued till 11 November.
Naveen Ramgoolam will become Prime Minister for the third time
Naveen Ramgoolam was the Prime Minister between 1995 and 2000 and from 2005 to 2015.
Both Jugnauth and Ramgoolam come from families that have dominated Mauritius politics since independence from Britain in 1968. Ramgoolam, 77, is the son of Sivasagar Ramgoolam, who led Mauritius to independence. Ramgoolam will become PM for the third time.
India has maintained good relations with Mauritius since before its independence. The important reason for this is the dominance of the population of people of Indian origin there. Britain had taken laborers from India to Mauritius. At present, out of the population of 12 lakh there, 70% are people of Indian origin.
