An appalling incident involving teachers from Bihar’s Saharsa consuming alcohol during a school trip has sparked outrage among students and parents. The incident came to light after students of Upkramit Mouni Higher Secondary School in Dabauli village, under the Patarghat block in Saharsa, returned from an educational tour to the Bhimnagar Koshi Barrage.
According to allegations made by students and their parents, a group of teachers entrusted with the responsibility of approximately 45 students, were found to have consumed alcohol with fish while the students were enjoying the tour.
When the incident came to light, the Education Department took immediate action, issuing a show-cause notice to the teachers involved.
Speaking to Local18, the Patarghat Block Education Officer said that they have received information about teachers consuming alcohol and misbehaving with students during the tour organised under the Bihar Darshan Yojana. An investigation is currently underway.
The department has sought an explanation from nine teachers, including in-charge headmaster Anil Kumar, school teacher Diwakar Kumar, contract teachers Abhay Kumar Jha, Krishna Kumar Shandil, and Rajesh Kumar, school teacher Kshama Devi, contract teacher Khagesh Kumar, school teacher Arjun Kumar Verma, and night watchman Chhotu Nath Jha.
In response to the allegations, in-charge headmaster Anil Kumar Jha stated that he had come to know about some teachers consuming alcohol on the bus journey back from the tour. This led to students and their parents expressing their anger and locking the school in protest.
“While returning from the tour, I got to know that some teachers present in the bus had consumed alcohol, after which the students and their parents created a ruckus,” Jha said.
Speaking to Local18, a ninth-grade student Gopal Kumar shared that the intoxicated teachers were misbehaving and using abusive language. He specifically named teacher Diwakar, along with other teachers, as having consumed alcohol on the bus.
“Teacher Diwakar along with other teachers consumed alcohol in the bus. After returning from the tour, the drunk teachers tried to do obscene acts with the girl student, and when we opposed them, we were threatened,” Gopal Kumar added.
