Even before the attempt to assassinate Trump, many US presidents have been targeted.

Date- 13 July, Place- Butler city of Pennsylvania, USA. Former President Donald Trump was addressing an election rally. He had spoken for just 15 minutes when he was shot. There was chaos. After some time, in a statement issued by Trump, it was said that the bullet hit his ear. He is out of danger.

Trump is not the first US President or former President to be assassinated. There are many names in the political history of America who have either been assassinated or attempts have been made to assassinate them.

Abraham Lincoln
On 14 April 1865, America’s 16th President Abraham Lincoln was watching the play ‘Our American Cousin’ at Ford Theater in Washington. At the time of the incident, Lincoln’s security guard ‘John Parker’, who was sitting in the balcony, was not with him at that time. He had left the place during the interval. At 10:15 pm, seeing the opportunity, the attacker John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head from behind.

Lincoln was taken to the hospital, where he died the next morning, i.e. on April 15. The shooter, John Wilkes Booth, was a professional theatre artist. John Wilkes Booth, who shot Lincoln, had an encounter with American soldiers in Virginia 10 days later. Where he was killed.

On 2 July 1881, James Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, was passing through Washington DC’s Balmoral Station and was boarding a train to New England when a man named Charles Guiteau shot him. He had been in office for only 4 months.

Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, tried hard to remove the bullet lodged in the President’s chest using a special machine but was unsuccessful. He died two and a half months later on September 19. Charles Guiteau was convicted of Garfield’s murder. He was hanged a year after the shooting.

James Garfield was the second president to be assassinated just six months after taking office.

William McKinley
On September 6, 1901, the 25th President of the United States, William McKinley, was shot. He was shaking hands with people after giving a speech in Buffalo when a man fired two bullets into his chest.

Doctors expected McKinley to recover, but the bullet wounds developed gangrene. McKinley died on September 14, 1901, six months after beginning his second term.

Leon F. Zolgosz, 28, confessed to the shootings. He was an anti-establishment. He was found guilty at trial and sentenced to death in the electric chair on October 29, 1901.

William McKinley suffered a gunshot wound which led to his death 14 days after the attack.

John F. Kennedy
On 22 November 1963, the 35th President of America, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. He was travelling in an open car when he was shot. The security personnel took him to Parkland Memorial Hospital. However, the doctors declared him dead at 1 pm. Governor Connally, who was travelling in Kennedy’s car, was also injured in this attack, but he recovered soon.

The person who shot Kennedy was former Marine Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was arrested by the police, but two days later, a supporter of Kennedy killed Oswald as well. This incident created a stir in the entire world along with America. The mystery of his murder has not been solved till date.

Ronald Reagan- Shot at the President to impress an actress
30 March 1981. The then US President Ronald Reagan was about to get into his car amid tight security after attending a function in Washington DC. There was a crowd of media and people around him. Suddenly a man from the crowd started firing at Reagan.

The man who fired the shot was John Hinckley. One of his bullets hit the bulletproof car glass and entered Reagan’s chest. After staying in the hospital for some time, Reagan was saved. In this incident, 3 of Reagan’s colleagues were also shot. However, all the four people who were shot survived.

Hinckley told the court that he wanted to impress the famous actress of that time, Jodie Foster. Foster became famous for her acting in the film ‘Taxi Driver’. In court, Hinckley’s lawyers declared him ‘insane’, due to which he could not get the death penalty. In the year 2022, the court completely acquitted Hinckley.
