On Saturday night, the police lathicharged the protesters in Margao.

Police detained five protesters Local people and leaders of many parties demonstrated in Old Goa regarding this statement. Earlier on Saturday night, some protesters blocked the National Highway in Margao and also clashed with the police. After which the police took five people into custody.

Archdiocese of Goa condemns Welingkar’s comments The Council for Social Justice and Peace, the social work wing of the Archdiocese of Goa, issued a statement saying that the entire Catholic community of Goa condemns Welingkar’s derogatory and vile statement. Welingkar’s statement has hurt the sentiments not only of the Catholic community but also of those who have faith in St. Francis.

The organization appealed to the protesting people to maintain restraint for the sake of peace and communal harmony. The organization also demanded the concerned authorities to take action against Velingkar.

Court refuses to grant interim bail to Velingkar

12 cases have been registered against Velingkar for hurting religious sentiments.

On Saturday, he filed an anticipatory bail plea in a local court, but the court refused to grant him interim protection from arrest. The hearing of this case will take place on Monday.
