Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda could run the government for only one and a half years.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda resigned from his post on Friday. According to the Kathmandu Post, he failed to get the confidence vote in the Parliament. He could remain the Prime Minister for only 1 year and 6 months.
In the floor test, he got the support of only 63 out of 275 MPs. 194 MPs of Nepal’s National Assembly voted against him. He needed the support of 138 MPs to save the government.
In fact, earlier this month, Nepal’s second largest and pro-China party CPN-UML of KP Sharma Oli decided to break the alliance with Prime Minister Prachanda’s party Communist Party of Nepal. After this, his government came into minority. Under Article 100 (2) of Nepal’s Constitution, he had to prove majority in a month. He failed in this today.

Pro-China Oli joined hands with Deuba
Oli’s party CPN-UML has decided to form an alliance with the country’s largest party Nepali Congress. Just 4 months ago, KP Sharma Oli had supported Prachanda’s government. Then Prachanda had broken the alliance with Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress.
Let us tell you that Sher Bahadur Deuba is considered pro-India, while Oli is considered close to China. A discussion took place between Deuba and Oli on Sunday midnight regarding the post of Prime Minister.
Understand the number game of Nepali Parliament…
General elections were held in Nepal on 20 November 2022. No party got a majority in this election. Out of 275 seats, Nepali Congress won 89, CPN-UML won 78 and Prachanda’s Communist Party won 32 seats.
Despite winning the least number of seats among the three major parties, Prachanda became the Prime Minister on 25 December 2022 with the help of a coalition. He had the support of Deuba’s Nepali Congress. However, this alliance did not last long, after just 15 months, the alliance broke down in March 2024 after a rift between the two.
Prachanda then formed the government with the support of KP Oli, which is now in danger. This means that power is going to change for the third time in Nepal in the last 2 years.
Kathmandu Post has quoted sources as saying that in the new government, KP Sharma Oli will become PM for one and a half years. After this, Deuba will become the Prime Minister for the remaining term. This is likely to be approved today.
