No woman has become Prime Minister of Sri Lanka since 2000.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister of the country. Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake administered the oath of office to Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister. President Anura has entrusted Prime Minister Amarasuriya with the responsibility of important ministries like justice, education, health and investment.
Apart from this, Vijitha Heerth and Lakshman Nipunarachchi also took oath as cabinet ministers. Sri Lanka’s cabinet has a total of 4 members including the President and the Prime Minister. This is the smallest cabinet in the history of Sri Lanka.
Harini is the third woman to hold the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Before her, Sirimavo Bandaranaike (3 times) and Chandrika Kumaratunga (1 time) have been the women Prime Ministers of the country. Harini Amarasuriya became an MP for the first time in 2020.

Before becoming an MP, Harini was a social worker and a university professor.
President Anura will soon dissolve the parliament Sri Lankan President Anura may soon dissolve the Parliament. Prime Minister Amarasuriya (54) and President Anura both are MPs of the National People’s Power (NPP). The NPP has only 3 seats in the 225-seat Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Namal Karunaratne with the NPP, while speaking to news agency AP, said that the President will dissolve the Parliament in the next 24 hours. After this, parliamentary elections can be held in November. Anura Dissanayake had also talked about dissolving the Parliament during the election campaign.
Anura also contested the presidential election in 2019. During this time he got only 3% votes. Harini Amarasuriya also campaigned with the President in these elections.

This is the first time in Sri Lanka that the results of the presidential election became clear in the second round of counting because no candidate got 50% votes in the first round of counting.
The two top candidates in the first round, Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People’s Power (NPP) and Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), were counted for the second time. Anura has succeeded in becoming the President with the help of young voters hoping for change due to the economic crisis in 2022.

Anura defeated current President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has been the PM of Sri Lanka six times.
From rebellion to power: Anura relaunched the party 5 years ago and reached the chair of the President Anura, who hails from Thambuttegama in the North Central Province, graduated in Science from the Kelaniya University in Colombo. He joined the JVP in 1987, when the anti-India insurgency was at its peak. The party led two bloody revolts.
Anura became the head of the party in 2014. The JVP was renamed as NPP in 2019. Anura visited India in February 2024, which is a sign of NPP’s changing attitude towards India.

Sri Lanka’s new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that he does not want to remain sandwiched between India and China. In an interview to Monocle magazine, Anura said that Sri Lanka does not want to get caught in the ongoing battle for dominance in the world.
