The Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Sujit Kumar, on Wednesday said that only one local listed terrorist is currently active in the Valley, while the threat from Pakistan-based terror handlers continues to persist.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Kumar said that local terrorists were behind attacks on a policeman in Anantnag and subsequently on non-local labourers in Kulgam this year. He added that the local terrorist was also accompanied by foreign terrorists.

Police had identified Lateef Ahmad as the terrorist allegedly involved in the two attacks, and his posters were subsequently put up across Srinagar city.

Responding to a question about the ease of passenger movement on the national highway when security convoys pass, the IGP said the matter would be discussed with senior officials, adding that an established procedure was in place in view of past incidents and attacks.

“Like I said, there is a threat, and we are getting constant threat inputs. We also keep recovering IEDs every other day along the national highway,” he said.

Asked about the use of technology by terrorists, Kumar said that any technology being used by terrorists or their outfits was on the police radar, adding that such matters were operational in nature.

Meanwhile, police have intensified night checking and patrolling in several areas of Srinagar following threat inputs generated by the police and other security agencies.

Drug And Cyberfraud Crackdown

The IGP also said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police had registered 1,651 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 1,941 accused across the Kashmir Zone between January 1 and October 31, 2026.

During the period, police recovered more than 1,711 kg of narcotic substances as part of the ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking.

According to data released by the J&K Police, properties worth approximately Rs 154 crore, including movable and immovable assets linked to NDPS cases, were seized or attached as part of efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and their financial infrastructure.

The police also froze 567 bank accounts involving approximately Rs 1.71 crore, while cash amounting to Rs 1.1 crore was recovered during investigations.

Meanwhile, the Kashmir Zone Police received 12,385 financial fraud complaints between January and October 2026, involving a total amount of Rs 54.66 crore.

Of this amount, approximately Rs 7.48 crore, or 13.68 per cent, was recovered or saved through police intervention. A total of 93 FIRs were registered in connection with financial fraud cases. The police also identified seven bank fraud cases involving mule accounts, which are commonly used to route proceeds of cybercrime and financial fraud.
