Karlos Nasar put on a commanding display at the World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo (China) rewriting the men’s 95kg world records across all three categories to walk away with his fourth world title on Wednesday. The Bulgarian lifted a combined 415kg – 185kg in the snatch and 230kg in the clean and jerk – leaving Kazakhstan’s Nurgissa Adiletuly trailing by 16kg.

The 21-year-old, who won Olympic gold in 2024, is competing in the 95kg category after moving up from 89kg.

Iran’s Ali Alipour, the reigning 2024 Asian Games champion, finished third with 396kg, three kilograms behind Adiletuly, who totalled 399kg.

China’s Qian Feixiang had to settle for fourth on 385kg.

There was little to fault in Nasar’s performance as he converted every one of his six attempts. He steadily raised his snatch lifts from 175kg to 180kg and then 185kg, before moving on to 213kg, 220kg and a record-breaking 230kg in the clean and jerk.

That final effort took the clean and jerk world record beyond its previous mark of 220kg. Nasar also raised the overall record to 415kg, moving past the 398kg previously established by Alipour in September.

Despite the scale of his achievement, Nasar played down the significance of the result.

“This is normal for me,” Nasar told Xinhua. “I feel good. I’m here only for the gold medal.”

The fourth world crown added to the Bulgarian’s growing collection of major honours and underlined his standing among the top names in international weightlifting.

The attention surrounding him continued beyond the competition. Fans gathered around Nasar following the medal ceremony, eager to get photographs with the champion.

“This is love. I like this. This is my motivation,” he said.

The Ningbo championships carry added importance for competitors looking towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the event serving as the opening stage of the qualification pathway.

The competition had already witnessed another historic performance on Tuesday, when DPR Korea’s Song Kuk Hyang swept all three world records in the women’s 69kg category. The 25-year-old also made her Olympic ambitions clear, saying she wanted to win gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Song posted 122kg in the snatch and 153kg in the clean and jerk to register a total of 275kg. In the process, she improved the three world records she had established at the Asian Games in September by one, one and two kilograms, respectively.

Her compatriot Ri Suk took silver with 259kg, while Colombia’s Julieth Rodriguez completed the podium with 245kg.
