The US has imposed sanctions on a Chandigarh-based business couple, two other Indians and nine companies associated with them. They are accused of fraudulently providing flags and documents of other countries to Iran’s ‘secret oil ships’ (shadow fleet). According to the US Finance Ministry, Chandigarh resident Sunil Kumar Sharma and his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid are accused of getting such ships registered in other countries (like Guyana, Mozambique etc.) without approval through fake websites and institutions, so that they can carry Iranian oil without getting caught. After the ban, all their properties in America have been frozen and any of their transactions with American citizens and companies have been banned. Apart from this, a Turkish company has also been tightened for providing help to Iranian Airlines. What is ‘Flag of Convenience’ (FOC)?
