Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has instructed the country’s armed forces to respond immediately to any new threat, with no geographical restrictions on where such a response could take place, according to a statement issued on Saturday.
The warning comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel, with fears that months of conflict could escalate into another phase of fighting.
Khamenei’s order was issued during a meeting with senior commanders of Iran’s armed forces. Iranian state media said he called for an immediate and effective response to any potential enemy threat. The statement was also published on his official Telegram account.
The latest warning follows a series of developments around the region. On Friday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said four oil tankers had caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after allegedly using unauthorised routes.
A separate maritime report said a crude tanker was hit by an unknown projectile while leaving the strategic waterway. The claims could not all be independently verified.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint in the conflict. The waterway carries a significant share of global oil supplies and has faced repeated disruptions since the war began.
How The Current Conflict Began
The present crisis escalated sharply on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran, targeting military and nuclear-related infrastructure. Iran responded with attacks on Israel and US-linked military positions in the region. Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during the initial strikes, after which his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, became Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
A June agreement briefly opened the way for negotiations and efforts to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the arrangement later broke down, and military tensions continued.
In recent weeks, the possibility of renewed US and Israeli strikes has again increased tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that fighting with Iran could resume, while Washington has also signalled that further military action remains possible. At the same time, Qatar and other regional mediators have been trying to revive negotiations.
Against this backdrop, Khamenei’s latest order signals that Tehran is preparing for a potentially wider confrontation if it faces another attack.
