The reason for the removal of US Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia from the post has come to light. According to Axios report, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had removed him on charges of leaking classified information to journalists. This matter is related to Russia-Ukraine war and Iran war. Sylvia had admitted to giving confidential information to journalists during the investigation. Sylvia was removed from the post on 28 October. According to the report, for about a year from June 2025, he kept in touch with journalists of two different media organizations and gave them confidential information. The names of both the media organizations have not been made public yet. Complete details of the leaked information have not been revealed. So far, four important things have come to light in the reports related to the investigation: 1. Gave information about American military help to Ukraine: Sylvia had told a journalist about the help being given by America to Ukraine recorded in a confidential military report. For this he used the notes made while reading the report. He had told these things to the journalist in a face-to-face meeting instead of giving written documents. However, information related to the names of weapons, their numbers and supply has not been made public. 2. Investigation of messages related to Iran: The investigation also revealed a conversation with a journalist on the Signal app. Sylvia had received a message from the journalist in June or July 2026. He told the investigating officers that he thought the message was related to Iran. He said that he did not remember the exact details of the conversation and while deleting the messages, the entire chat was accidentally deleted. US officials suspect that he deliberately deleted the conversations. However, what information was contained in the message has not been revealed. 3. Met twice with a journalist who was writing a book on the Ukraine war: Sylvia had kept in touch with journalists from two different media organizations. One of these journalists was writing a book on the Ukraine war. Sylvia met him twice. 4. Conversation and meeting outside through Signal app: Sylvia used Signal app to contact journalists. After a journalist’s entry into the Pentagon was closed, he met him at the Silver Diner restaurant in Virginia. Failed the polygraph test four times, then agreed to give information. According to an American official, Sylvia had failed the polygraph i.e. lie detector test four times. After this he admitted to giving confidential information to journalists in the video recording. In a polygraph test, changes like breathing, heartbeat and blood pressure are measured to detect whether a person is lying. During the investigation, he also gave his personal phone to the authorities, so that his conversations with journalists could be investigated. However, a polygraph test is not considered conclusive evidence that someone is lying. There were also reports of shortage of weapons during the Iran war. Sylvia’s case has come to light at a time when many information about American weapons stockpile and military preparations for the Iran war had come to the media. According to the Washington Post, after these reports, polygraph examination of many army officers was conducted. On October 28, Reuters quoted the US Army’s internal assessment as saying that it could cost about $29 billion to replenish the stockpile of weapons used in the Iran war. America’s total expenditure on the war was said to be more than 47 billion dollars. This includes the cost of replenishment of weapons, military operations and damage to equipment. Pentagon formed an investigation team to stop leaks. The Pentagon formed an investigation team in collaboration with the US Justice Department in July 2026 to identify officials who passed confidential information to the media. Defense Minister Pete Hegseth announced the deployment of additional resources and staff to identify leakers and bring legal action against them. Earlier, the Pentagon had tightened the rules related to entry and reporting for journalists reporting on defense matters. In protest against this, many journalists and media organizations had returned their press passes. ———————— Also read this news… 10 American military planes landed in Israel: Trump’s meeting with the top commander of West Asia, preparations to attack Iran again.
