Nearly 2,000 MBBS seats remain vacant across India following multiple rounds of NEET UG 2026 counselling, prompting state governments and medical colleges to seek permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to conduct an additional mop-up round of admissions. A significant number of these vacancies are in private medical colleges and deemed universities, where high tuition fees have emerged as a major concern.

According to a report by The Times of India, vacancy lists released by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) showed more than 800 unfilled MBBS seats after the final round of central counselling. Several state counselling authorities, including those in Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal and Rajasthan, have also reported more than 100 vacant seats each.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Account for 824 Vacant MBBS Seats

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry account for a substantial share of the vacant seats. As many as 824 MBBS seats across 14 deemed universities in the two regions remained unallotted after the final round of central counselling.

In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, annual tuition fees at deemed universities range from Rs 23 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. Government-quota seats in private medical colleges can cost nearly Rs 10 lakh annually, while management-quota fees may reach Rs 20 lakh a year.

Additional expenses, including hostel and mess charges, further increase the financial burden on students and their families.

The high cost of medical education has reportedly discouraged several NEET-qualified candidates from taking admission, even when seats were available.

Karnataka Reports 191 Vacant MBBS Seats

Karnataka has reported 191 vacant MBBS seats despite conducting seven rounds of counselling. This is the first time in five years that the state has recorded such a shortfall, according to the report.

The state’s Directorate of Medical Education has approached the NMC seeking a reduction in qualifying marks to help fill the remaining seats. Some private medical colleges have also reportedly offered fee concessions to attract candidates.

The qualifying cut-off for NEET UG 2026 was 213 out of 720 marks for general and EWS candidates and 177 marks for candidates belonging to OBC, SC and ST categories.

The NMC’s decision on requests for an additional admission round will determine whether some of the remaining vacancies can be filled this academic year.
