Four people were killed and 11 others injured when an Italian military helicopter serving with the European Union Force in Bosnia (EUFOR) crashed during a routine training mission on Thursday.

Videos shared on social media appeared to show the Chinook CH-47 helicopter spinning in the air before plunging to the ground.

The crash took place in the Brcko region of northern Bosnia, around 180 kilometres north of the capital, Sarajevo. There were 15 people aboard the aircraft when it went down, according to local hospital officials.

Salih Ibrahimbegovic, a spokesman for Brcko hospital, said three people died at the crash site, while a fourth succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital. Italy’s defence ministry said the victims included two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers.

Footage circulating on X appeared to capture the helicopter rotating in the air before crashing into a grassy field. Images published by local media showed the wreckage of the aircraft, which was largely destroyed.

The injured were taken to Brcko hospital for treatment. Hospital spokesman Ibrahimbegovic said three of the 11 patients were expected to be transferred to a hospital in Tuzla, about 50 kilometres away.

“We are in the process of saving lives, that is what matters most,” he said.

The cause of the crash remains unclear. EUFOR said it had launched a “full and thorough investigation” and would release further details once the information had been verified.

The force also confirmed that no civilian infrastructure, property or vehicles were damaged, and no civilians were injured.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed his condolences to the families of those killed, saying his thoughts were with them during a time of “profound grief”.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also offered condolences, saying her thoughts were with the victims, their families and those involved in the peacekeeping mission.
