Market Today: The domestic equity markets extended their gains on Thursday, October 29, with the Sensex rallying more than 550 points and the Nifty crossing the 22,850 mark in morning trade. Buying across FMCG, banking, information technology and other heavyweight stocks lifted market sentiment, while a decline in the India VIX indicated easing near-term volatility expectations.

At 10:45 am, the Sensex was trading at 73,796.77, up 550.74 points or 0.75% from its previous close of 73,246.03, while the Nifty was trading at 22,847.35, up 148.50 points or 0.65% from its previous close of 22,698.85.

The rally gathered momentum after a relatively subdued opening, with the Sensex rising from around 73,395 at 9:26 am to nearly 73,800 by 10:45 am.

Why Is the Stock Market Rising Today?

1. US Federal Reserve Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged

The US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4% provided an important global backdrop for markets. The decision was broadly in line with expectations, although the Fed’s assessment of persistent inflation and the possibility of further monetary tightening remain concerns for investors.

The Fed’s pause may have helped investors assess the immediate interest-rate outlook, but it should not automatically be interpreted as a dovish policy shift. The 10-2 vote also highlighted differences among policymakers over the appropriate policy stance.

2. Easing Crude Oil Prices Offer Some Relief

Crude oil prices eased in early trade amid renewed hopes of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East. Brent crude was trading around $114.50 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was near $102.

However, oil prices remain elevated, leaving India exposed to risks from a higher import bill, inflationary pressures and a weaker rupee.

3. Value Buying After Recent Market Weakness

The benchmarks also appear to be benefiting from renewed buying following recent losses. The Sensex had closed 352.64 points lower on Wednesday, while the Nifty 50 had declined 50.90 points to settle at 22,698.85.

The subsequent recovery could reflect bargain hunting and short covering, although the available index data alone cannot establish how much each factor contributed to the rally. Sustained buying in heavyweight stocks has helped the benchmarks extend their gains through the morning session.

4. Broad-Based Buying Supports Market Sentiment

The gains were not restricted to the frontline indices. The Nifty 100 advanced 0.62%, while the Nifty 500 gained 0.53%. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.47%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 climbed 0.62%.

This broad participation suggests that buying interest extended beyond a handful of large-cap stocks. However, the Nifty Smallcap 250 was nearly unchanged, indicating that the rally was not uniform across every segment of the market.

5. India VIX Falls More Than 3%

The India VIX declined 3.40% to 15.69, compared with its previous close of 16.25. The decline indicates lower market-implied expectations of near-term volatility.

While a falling VIX can accompany a recovery in equities, it does not guarantee that the market will continue to rise. Investors remain sensitive to crude oil prices, global monetary policy, foreign fund flows and geopolitical developments.
