A property dispute linked to the lease of a hotel is suspected to have led to the shooting in Guwahati’s Lachit Nagar area on Monday night, in which five people were killed and one person was injured, police said.

Guwahati Commissioner of Police Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta said the firing took place at around 9 pm at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area. The accused, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, was arrested within an hour of the incident, and the weapon used in the shooting was seized.

Mahanta said four of the five deceased belonged to the same family, while the fifth victim and the injured person were from the same village.

Lease Dispute Under Probe

According to Mahanta, preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute over the hotel’s lease between the owner’s side and the person who had leased the property.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, we suspect that the incident stemmed from a property dispute related to the lease agreement of Hotel Hotel Bilas Inn,” he said.

The police commissioner said the investigation was still at an early stage and that a thorough inquiry was under way. Further details are expected as investigators establish the sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the firing.

“A scientific and thorough investigation is underway to bring the case to its logical conclusion. We will provide further updates as and when more information becomes available,” he added.

Among those killed were Hotel Bilas Inn owner Helena Bharali and her son. Police have not yet released further details about the other victims.

One Injured, Undergoing Treatment

Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (in-charge) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Prof Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, said two injured people had initially been brought to the hospital, including one who was declared dead on arrival.

The deceased was identified as Narayan Das, around 48. He had sustained a bullet injury, the hospital official said.

The other person, identified as Satyendra Pathak, 42, had sustained an injury with both entry and exit wounds. He was stable and receiving treatment under the orthopaedics and surgery departments, Bezbaruah said.
