On a rare day where all of India’s top order batters failed to fire, Shreyas Iyer saw the team’s understated middle-order batters step up and fire them to victory in the second T20I against New Zealand on Saturday. From 70/5 in the 11th over, Tilak Varma (51* off 26), Plant Man (31 off 17) and Nitish Reddy (26* off 13) took India home in the chase of 181. The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, but Shreyas posted a measured message on social media.
Refusing to get carried away, Shreyas stated in the post-match presentation ceremony that the job has only been half done. He then took to social media to reiterate it.
“Job half done!” posted Shreyas on his official X account after India’s second T20I win.

Head coach Gautam Gambhirmeanwhile, posted another three-word message to acknowledge the victory.
“Boys becoming Men,” wrote Gambhir on social media.
“I feel that every individual in our game is a match winner, and today we saw the example of that. Like, honestly speaking, when we lost wickets, consecutive wickets especially, we thought that the game was going away from us. But Tilak and Reddy, they showed immense character, and also a great cameo by Naman Dhir,” Shreyas told broadcasters after the four-wicket win.
Skipper Shreyas reserved special praise for Naman Dhir. He made a steely, unbeaten 42 from 15 balls to help India chase a record 226 in the first T20I and had also scored 24 off just six balls in the washed-out home T20I against the West Indies.
“We saw him in a couple of games back home against West Indies. He’s a phenomenal bowler as well, and once you get both the parts covered in terms of batting and bowling, I think he brings in a lot of character, and also when you see him move around in the field, he basically, he’s a comprehensive player,” he added.
Just one more win for India in any of the three remaining T20Is would guarantee them series victory.
