The University of Manchester has announced plans to establish a new centre in Bengaluru to strengthen its academic, research and industry partnerships in India. The proposed centre aims to create new opportunities for students, researchers, businesses and alumni by connecting the university’s expertise with India’s growing technology and innovation ecosystem.

The centre will provide a permanent base for the UK-based university to expand its engagement with Indian institutions and industries. It will also support collaborations between academics, businesses and entrepreneurs to address shared challenges and develop new opportunities in education, research and innovation.

A key focus of the proposed centre will be to help students gain practical industry experience through internships, work placements and employer-led projects. The initiative will draw on the university’s Partner-Enabled Learning (PEL) model, which integrates real-world projects into degree programmes.

Under this model, students work on projects involving employers, public bodies and community organisations while pursuing their degrees. The approach aims to help students develop practical skills, including problem-solving, adaptability and collaboration, alongside their academic learning. Credit-bearing projects and micro-internships are also part of the model.

The university already has relationships with several major Indian businesses and industry partners, including Reliance, Tata and Infosys, as well as a broader network of technology companies.

Bengaluru was selected as the preferred location because of its strong presence in higher education, technology and research. The city is home to leading universities, research institutions and multinational companies, many of which already work with the University of Manchester’s academics and graduates, the institute stated in its official press release.

The announcement was made at a special event at Science Gallery Bengaluru, attended by alumni and representatives from business and cultural sectors. The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Bev Craig, also attended the event, which included panel discussions on innovation and culture led by the university’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Duncan Ivison.

President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, Professor Duncan Ivison stated: “There is an incredible depth to Manchester’s relationship with India across education, business and culture. Our collaborations with these partners reflect who we are – open, values-led and ambitious in what we set out to achieve, so it’s been immensely valuable to see that reflected in the constructive conversations with the people I’ve met during this mission. That ambition continues with new partnerships formed this week. Our new Centre will be at the heart of deepening those relationships and I’m very excited to see what we can give, and what we can learn over the coming years.”

The University of Manchester currently operates international centres in Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
