Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu overcame a stiff challenge from Thailand’s world No. 26 Supanida Katethong to advance to the next round of the French Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Wednesday.

Sindhu spent an hour and four minutes on court before clinching a hard-fought 21-14, 8-21, 23-21 win in a gruelling three-game battle.

Sindhu made a strong start to take the first game 21-14, but Katethong bounced back in the second, dominating the rallies to level the contest with a convincing 21-8 victory.

The deciding game turned into a nail-biting contest as both shuttlers battled hard for every point. Sindhu kept her composure under pressure to clinch a narrow 23-21 victory and book her place in the next round.

Sindhu acknowledged that she wasn’t at her best despite the hard-fought victory, but expressed relief at making it through to the next round.

“Some matches you just have to find a way to win. Today was one of those. Credit to Supanida, she made me fight for every point,” Sindhu tweeted on Wednesday evening.

In another women’s singles clash, Unnati Hooda suffered an early exit after going down 18-21, 21-12, 17-21 to Japan’s Riko Gunji in a three-game battle.

Ayush Shetty fought back from a game down to defeat Kidambi Srikanth 19-21, 21-16, 21-12 in under an hour to advance to the next round in the men’s singles.

Meanwhile, India’s top-ranked men’s singles player and former world championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen gave a walkover to world No. 9 Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the opening round.
