US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to commit to negotiations with Russia to end the war, saying failure to do so could have serious consequences for Kyiv.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Ukraine must be willing to reach a settlement, while arguing that Russia’s military strength and continued advances put it in a stronger position.
“Ukraine has to want to settle this war. Zelenskyy has to want to settle this war,” Trump said. “And if he doesn’t, I think it’s going to be a very bad thing.”
Trump Says Russia Has Military Advantage
Trump said Moscow appeared interested in ending the conflict but continued to gain ground on the battlefield. He called Russia as a powerful force with the resources to sustain its military campaign.
“Russia would like to get it done,” Trump said, adding, “Russia is a big machine. They just keep grinding forward, and that’s what they’ve done. They’ve taken a very large piece of land.”
He also questioned claims that Ukraine was holding its ground, saying Russian forces continued to advance.
“Week by week, it just—they march forward. They just keep marching forward. They have an unlimited supply of people, this too,” Trump said.
The US President also expressed frustration over Washington’s financial support for Kyiv, saying American taxpayers were tired of spending billions of dollars on the war.
“Look, we have given tremendous amounts to Ukraine. We’ve got nothing back other than high diesel,” Trump stated. “We have given probably more money to Ukraine than almost anybody over the years, hundreds of billions of dollars. We got nothing back. And the American taxpayers are tired of it.”
Trump Open To Putin-Xi Meeting
Trump has also said he would be willing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the war and pursuing global nuclear disarmament, even if Zelenskyy were not present.
“Anything I can do to end the war, whether somebody’s there or not, whatever I could do to end the war,” Trump said.
He added that a meeting with Putin and Xi could focus on nuclear disarmament, saying an agreement would be a major achievement for the world.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Zelenskyy’s handling of the conflict, arguing that Ukraine could have secured a better deal earlier if its leader had followed his advice.
