India’s net direct tax collection rose 13.21 per cent year-on-year to around Rs 13.38 lakh crore between April 1 and October 14 of the current financial year, supported by strong growth in corporate tax receipts.

Net corporate tax collection increased 20.58 per cent to over Rs 5.99 lakh crore during the period, while non-corporate tax receipts grew at a slower pace of 5.83 per cent to around Rs 6.92 lakh crore. Non-corporate taxes include payments made by individuals, firms and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs).

Collections from securities transaction tax (STT), levied on transactions in securities, surged 52 per cent year-on-year to Rs 46,840 crore till October 14 of FY27, reflecting a sharp increase in receipts from the securities market.

Refund issuances also recorded significant growth, rising 24.22 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2.65 lakh crore during the period.

On a gross basis, direct tax collection rose 15 per cent to Rs 16.03 lakh crore till October 14. This included corporate tax receipts of Rs 7.53 lakh crore and non-corporate tax collection of Rs 8.03 lakh crore.

Richa Sawhney, partner (tax) at Grant Thornton Bharat, said the latest figures reflected healthy tax buoyancy, with growth across key revenue streams.

“The latest direct tax numbers reflect healthy tax buoyancy, with broad-based growth across key revenue streams. Equally significant is the sharp increase in refunds, particularly for non-corporate taxpayers, which reflects the administration’s focus on faster processing of taxpayer claims. This suggests that revenue growth is being achieved alongside improved taxpayer service, pointing to a tax ecosystem that is increasingly focused on both compliance and facilitation,” Sawhney said.
