The National Testing Agency (NTA) is developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered helpline to address students’ examination-related queries. The facility will allow candidates to ask questions in multiple languages and access exam-related information. The agency is currently testing the toll-free service and its AI features, officials said. The helpline has not yet been launched for public use.

The number 1800 180 47 47 is being used for the proposed service. It was previously associated with an initiative by the High Power Task Force (HPTF), set up to collect suggestions on examination reforms. In August, a six-member committee led by Nandan Nilekani invited feedback from stakeholders through this number, with September 13 set as the deadline for submissions. Officials said the committee has received the suggestions and is preparing its final report. The number will now be repurposed for the NTA help desk.

The AI-based helpline is intended to make exam-related information more accessible and reduce difficulties faced by candidates, particularly those who struggle to navigate the agency’s website or encounter language barriers.

Students will be able to seek information about JEE and UGC-NET examinations, application procedures, fees, required documents, deadlines and eligibility criteria. According to officials, the AI system is being trained to respond using information available in the NTA’s database, potentially reducing the need for candidates to search across multiple websites.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to reform the NTA’s functioning and improve the examination system. The agency has faced scrutiny over exam administration and reliability, particularly amid student protests following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.

However, the NTA has not announced a public launch date for the helpline. Candidates will have to wait for an official notification detailing when the service will become operational and how it can be accessed.
