The Supreme Court-appointed inquiry committee investigating alleged police excesses during protests over the NEET paper leak controversy has finalised an online portal for registering complaints. The portal, developed with technical assistance from the National Informatics Centre (NIC), is awaiting launch and is expected to provide a platform for students, protesters and police personnel to submit their grievances.
According to a report published by Live Hindustan, the portal will accept complaints from both protesters and police personnel who claim to have been injured or affected by violence during the demonstrations. Separate forms have been created for the two sides. However, the official launch date and detailed instructions for filing complaints are yet to be announced.
NEET Paper Leak Protests: Why Is The Portal Being Set Up?
Following allegations of irregularities and a paper leak in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), students and student organisations staged protests in several parts of the country. They demanded an impartial investigation, action against those responsible and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
During the demonstrations, reports emerged of clashes between protesters and police in some locations. Several protesters and student organisations alleged that police personnel used excessive force against demonstrators, including those claiming to have protested peacefully. Some also alleged that cases were registered against them unfairly.
These complaints prompted scrutiny of the police response to the protests and the need for a mechanism through which those affected could present their accounts.
The Supreme Court-appointed High-Level Inquiry Committee (HPEC) has informed the court that the online complaint portal has been finalised and is awaiting launch. NIC provided technical assistance in developing the platform.
Once the portal becomes operational, affected individuals will be able to submit complaints relating to alleged police excesses, misconduct and other incidents connected with the protests. The provision for complaints from police personnel will also allow officers who claim to have suffered injuries or been affected by violence to present their accounts.
Public notices are expected to be published in major newspapers after the portal’s launch to inform people about the complaint process.
Five-Member Committee To Investigate Allegations
The Supreme Court has constituted a five-member committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy to examine the matter.
The committee’s inquiry covers allegations of police violence against protesters, claims of misconduct involving female protesters and incidents in which police personnel were reportedly injured during the demonstrations.
The online portal is intended to provide a formal channel for collecting complaints and accounts from the people involved. The submission of a complaint, however, does not by itself establish that an allegation is true; the claims will need to be examined through the inquiry process.
Students and protesters who possess videos, photographs or other documents relating to the alleged police action may find such material relevant to their complaints. However, the precise requirements for uploading evidence and the documents that will be accepted will depend on the official portal instructions released at launch.
Those intending to file complaints should wait for the official announcement and follow the prescribed procedure.
The portal’s launch is awaited, and further details about registration, evidence submission and the handling of complaints are expected to become clear once the committee’s formal instructions are made public.
