Stock Market Today: The domestic equity markets extended their gains on Tuesday, October 13, with benchmark indices climbing nearly 1% in morning trade, led by a strong rally in information technology (IT) stocks and buying in banking shares. The recovery in heavyweight stocks supported the frontline indices, even as small-cap shares continued to face selling pressure.

The BSE Sensex surged 665.97 points, or 0.93%, to 72,590.65 at around 9:58 am. The index had closed at 71,924.68 in the previous session and today opened at 71,951.73.

The NSE Nifty advanced 211.60 points, or 0.95%, to 22,574.95, compared with its previous close of 22,363.35.

IT stocks emerged as the biggest drivers of the morning rally, with the Nifty IT index climbing 3.05% to 29,213.75.

Among Sensex constituents, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) surged 4.77%, while HCL Technologies gained 4.18%. Tech Mahindra advanced 2.93% and Infosys rose 2.30%. Persistent buying in these heavyweight technology stocks helped lift the benchmark indices.

Other major gainers included Trent, up 1.55%, and Eternal, which rose 1.46%. HDFC Bank gained 1.43%, while Adani Ports advanced 1.34%.

Banking stocks also supported the rally. The Nifty Bank index rose 0.76% to 55,334.40, while the Nifty Financial Services index gained 0.76% to 25,055.75. The Nifty PSU Bank index advanced 0.99%.

Most other sectoral indices also traded higher. The Nifty FMCG index rose 0.93%, the Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index gained 0.82%, and the Nifty Realty index advanced 0.80%. The Nifty Auto index was up 0.67%.

The broader market presented a mixed picture, with mid-cap indices gaining while small-cap stocks continued to decline.

The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.53%, and the Nifty Midcap 150 gained 0.45%. However, the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.68%, while the Nifty Smallcap 50 declined 0.57%. The Nifty Smallcap 250 was down 0.47%.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Media index dropped 0.47%, while the Nifty Pharma index slipped 0.23%. The Nifty Healthcare index was marginally lower.

India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, fell 5.22% to 14.46, indicating a decline in the market’s near-term volatility gauge.

V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said, “There are no triggers to change the ongoing trend of sustained FII selling and DII buying in the cash market. The restrictions imposed by the RBI by limiting trading in forex derivatives and raising the cost of trading have brought some relief to the rupee which appreciated by 0.99% to 95.77 to the dollar at market close yesterday. This has helped to reduce FII selling to Rs 1708 cr yesterday. But with the US 10-year bond yield hovering above 5.2%, chances are that FIIs will continue to sell in the cash market. With the net inflows into mutual funds touching a record high of Rs 38307 crores in September, the DIIs will continue to absorb all the selling from FIIs.”

He added that the patient long-term domestic investors will certainly stand to gain from from the systematic investments they are making now.

“The September CPI inflation print at 5.54% came on expected lines. With rising food inflation ( 7.74%) and Brent crude trading consistently above $100, a rate hike by the RBI in December is a foregone conclusion now. This will be margin accretive for banks,” Vijayakumar said.
