While the united Opposition is turning up the heat on the government over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to turn its attention to a different battle — how to retain Uttar Pradesh in the 2027 Assembly elections.

The party will hold a crucial meeting in Varanasi on October 14 and 15, bringing together key BJP functionaries and grassroots organisers associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The choice of venue is significant: Varanasi is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency and one of the BJP’s most politically important strongholds in the state.

BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh and the party’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge, Vinod Tawde, are expected to attend the meeting along with Dharm Pal, which will focus on the organisational groundwork needed ahead of the high-stakes Assembly polls.

The RSS, too, is set to have a presence at the deliberations. Assembly in-charges and vistaraks — functionaries tasked with expanding and strengthening the organisation on the ground, from the Sangh’s Kashi and Goraksh prants — have been asked to participate.

The participation of these functionaries underlines the importance of coordination between the BJP and the wider Sangh network as the party begins preparing for the electoral contest well ahead of schedule.

The stakes are considerable. The Kashi and Goraksh prants together cover at least 133 Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, making the meeting particularly important for the BJP’s electoral planning. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening the party’s organisational machinery across these politically crucial regions.

  • For the BJP, the challenge in Uttar Pradesh goes beyond campaigning in the run-up to the election. The party will need to keep its cadre engaged, maintain coordination between its political and organisational networks, and build on its existing support base in a state that remains central to its national political calculations.

Earlier in the month, the BJP and RSS functionaries of Kashi and Gorakhpur region held a coordination meeting in Sultanpur, which was chaired by RSS Sah-Karyavah Arun Kumar. The meeting sought to bolster mobilisation of ground cadres in two zones: Kashi that has PM Modi’s constituency and Gorakhpur that has CM Yogi Adityanath’s constituency.

Earlier, such coordination meetings were held in Awadh and Kanpur regions as well.

With the Opposition sharpening its attack over SIR, the Varanasi meeting offers a glimpse of the BJP’s parallel priority: getting its organisational house in order before the 2027 electoral battle gathers pace, which is often touted as a semifinal before the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
