Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday called for a march to the Supreme Court, urging opposition parties and people who believe in the Constitution and democracy to join the demonstration.

Speaking about the recent protests in Delhi, Gandhi said young people had come out to protest without hatred and alleged that protesters were assaulted. He said, “This is not the kind of India we want.”

Gandhi said the proposed march would not be held in the name of any political party, individual, gender, state, community or caste. Instead, he said, “We will march as Indians — as every person who believes in democracy and wants to stand up for democracy.”

He appealed to people to join the march irrespective of their political affiliations, saying, “Walk with us. There is nothing to be afraid of.”

Appeal To Opposition Parties

Gandhi also urged opposition parties and their leaders to join the march to the Supreme Court. He said a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Justice of India on behalf of the people.

According to Gandhi, the memorandum would include demands to “stop vote theft”, end the SIR exercise, remove electronic voting machines and “remove Gyanesh Kumar”.

The proposed march comes amid opposition protests over the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition has alleged irregularities in the electoral process and has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Gandhi also said, “Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat cannot suppress the voice of India.” He urged people to participate with “love, brotherhood and patriotism”, adding, “Do not be afraid. The whole of India will march to the Supreme Court tomorrow.”

He called on the youth, opposition parties and civil society groups supporting democracy and the Constitution to participate.

He said a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Justice of India, demanding an end to what he described as “vote chori”, a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Taking aim at the BJP leadership, Gandhi said, “Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Ajit Doval and Mohan Bhagwat cannot silence India’s voice. These cowards cannot intimidate us. They will have to step aside.”
