Pakistan’s Shahbaz Sharif government on Sunday imposed emergency in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and dismissed the government. President Asif Ali Zardari announced this.

Imran Khan’s party PTI is in power here. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was marching towards Islamabad with his supporters demanding the release of the former PM. Now he will have to leave his post.

The Shahbaz government alleges that the PTI government is deliberately not cooperating in the fight against terrorism in the province. Pak government will not tolerate terrorism.

Imran Khan’s party PTI opposed the decision

The decision to impose emergency was taken in the emergency cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The security situation of the province was discussed in the meeting. The government decided to impose emergency and Governor’s rule under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.

However, former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party PTI has opposed this move. Party president Gauhar Ali Khan termed it undemocratic and said that peace and stability cannot be brought by weakening the rights of the province.

Shahbaz accused Afghanistan of not controlling terrorism

Sharif said in the cabinet meeting that the PTI-led provincial government cannot be allowed to destabilize the country’s economy.

He also expressed concern over the deaths of civilians, policemen, security forces and children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Shahbaz also said that Pakistan has been continuously appealing to neighboring Afghanistan to rein in terrorist organizations, but their complaints are not being heeded.

PTI said – the decision may increase violence further

Imran Khan’s close aide and PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari described the decision as ‘ridiculous’. He claimed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the only legitimately elected government of Pakistan.

Bukhari said that this decision may increase violence, instability and problems of common people. He said that the way to resolve the dispute through dialogue was open.

According to him, this step of the government shows that it did not want to talk.

Earlier, demonstrations by Imran Khan’s supporters have turned violent several times. Security personnel and civilians also died during the protests in 2024.

What is the meaning of emergency and governor’s rule?

Under Article 232 of the Constitution of Pakistan, emergency can be imposed in case of war, attack by another country or worsening situation within the country which the provincial government is unable to handle. When emergency occurs, the central government gets more rights to interfere in the affairs of the province and make laws on some issues.

At the same time, under Article 234, when the government of a province is unable to function as per the Constitution, Governor’s rule can be imposed there. For this, the President’s decision has to be approved by a joint meeting of both the Houses of Parliament.

If approval is not received, Governor’s rule ends after two months. Even if approved, it can be extended only for two months at a time. This arrangement cannot last more than six months in total.

The Government of Pakistan has not used Article 233 in this decision. This article deals with restrictions on some basic rights of citizens during emergency.

Talks between PTI and government failed

73-year-old former cricketer Imran Khan is lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since 2023. More than 100 cases are pending against him, including charges related to corruption and inciting violence.

The long march started after two rounds of talks failed between PTI and the central government. The talks broke down over the issue of being allowed to meet Imran Khan before ending the protest. PTI wanted to meet Imran first, whereas the government’s condition was that the party should end the protest first.

The central government had already warned that the protesters would not be allowed to enter Islamabad. After this, security was increased in the capital and roads were closed by placing shipping containers on the planned routes of the march. Now by imposing emergency the PTI government itself has been dismissed.
