On one side was the world of ‘Street Fighter’, on the other side were the big names of Hollywood and among them was an Indian actor who made his identity not through any film family or stardom, but through his body, breathing and martial arts. Vidyut Jammwal is now appearing on the global screen as Dhalsim. But the interesting thing is that Vidyut does not consider this character as a big challenge. For him, meeting Dhalsim was like fate knocked at the door and he just opened the door. From Gayatri Mantra in Las Vegas to 45 days spent with Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, from Dhalsim’s bald look to the upcoming film with Tiger Shroff – Vidyut, in a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, said many such things, in which he has the style of an action star and also a completely different perspective on life. Question: When the offer of Dhalsim of ‘Street Fighter’ came, did you feel – ‘This character is made for me only’ or did you see a big challenge in front of you? Answer: Didn’t feel like a challenge at all. When the director called me, he had done complete research about me. He knew who I was and what I could do with the character. That call itself was great. I thought luck was a very good thing. You just stop, things will come to you automatically. Maybe this formula worked for me. He was looking for the 11 best fighters in the world and he found me. The mixture of Yoga and Kalaripayattu in this character was amazing for me. Question: What is the biggest difference between Dhalsim and Vidyut and what is the biggest connection? Answer: The difference is that Dhalsim is a man with children. He has a wife, children. But we both have one quality in common – he fights for others, not for himself. For me too, there must be a purpose behind the fight. If there is no reason then what is the need to fight? Question: Your yoga, meditation, breathing and control are also visible in the character of Dhalsim. Do you think today’s youth also need these things? Answer: Youth should do whatever they want to do. Whatever they want to follow, do it. He is smart, intelligent. Question: But in today’s generation there is so much noise around that it is difficult to control oneself. In such a situation, how will he bring glory to India in the world? Answer: Perhaps these things will not be there in them, only then they will bring glory to India in the world. The generations older than us have spent a lot of time trying to achieve these things. Today’s generation is very good. Their minds are different, their thinking is different. We have only one job – don’t stop their thinking. Let them fly. If you have children, tell them- ‘You do whatever you want to do, I will take care of it.’ Just remember that some things are done within limits. And these children know that scope. Question: You talk about yoga, Kalaripayattu, breathing and knowing yourself. Actually, what should the youth learn from these? Answer: We have given different names to all these – Discipline, Yoga etc. Actually this is just an attempt to know oneself. Know yourself through yoga, martial arts, art or cooking. One should never stop trying to know oneself. The more you know yourself, the more you will not need to explain anything to anyone. Yoga is a good medium because it teaches you the basics – asana, pranayama, pratyahara. How to breathe, how to sit, how to walk. One who knows how to walk and sit properly can also learn to think properly. Question: During the trailer launch in Las Vegas you recited Gayatri Mantra, Surya and Chandra. The Hollywood stars present there kept looking at you. What was going on in your mind at that time? Answer: Actually, I was the first person who was given the mike. I felt that whenever I feel scared, I should chant Gayatri Mantra. When the Gayatri Mantra was done, I felt that now I should recite the Surya Chalisa and then also recite the Chandra Chalisa. But the way the whole atmosphere became calm there, it was very good. Many things do not need language. It is just a feeling. These mantras have the power to calm you down. There was a peace inside every person sitting there. It was a very good feeling. Question: If big names like Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes were on the same set, was there an atmosphere of stardom there? Answer: There was nothing funny or serious. Everyone is a legend. 50 Cent, Roman Reigns, Jason Momoa, Cody Rhodes – it was very comfortable to sit with them and have a normal conversation. What you have done in life is one thing and what you actually are is a different thing. If you remain as you are, everything is fine. Whenever there was a joke, everyone laughed. Everything was very normal. Question: Did you talk to these stars about India also? Answer: These people have visited India many times and know Indians. Roman Reigns loves India very much. According to him, the real audience of WWE is India. He has seen the madness here. Kodi has a heartfelt desire to come to India. 50 Cent has done many shows in India. But the biggest thing for me was that I was representing a martial artist who has worked in this traditional art. After spending 45 days with him the real person becomes visible. I can proudly say that every Indian martial artist will be respected in the world. Question: What was the reaction of family and friends on Dhalsim’s bald look? Answer: I am surprised that everyone is liking bald men! I’m saying to all my bald friends – ‘Why are you guys growing hair?’ Those who are gamers know that Dhalsim cannot have hair because he is a yogi. Those who are not gamers, they are just looking for entertainment. Someone made a very lovely comment – ‘You are looking cute.’ I didn’t understand how a bald man could look cute, but people said it was okay! Question: Fans’ expectations increase with every film. Does it feel pressured? Answer: There is no responsibility. The responsibility is on yourself to do the right thing, be happy and keep improving yourself. Even during the shooting, I used to think that I have reached here because of my martial arts. Now this is the time of test and I have to give my best. This was my only responsibility. Question: There is a lot of excitement about your next film with Tiger Shroff. What is going to happen on screen if both of them come together? Answer: Tiger and I are currently working on a film. After getting to know him, I realized that we both have the potential that when that film comes, it will be really amazing. Till date we have not found any director who can take both of us beyond our capabilities. That’s why I am very excited about this pairing.
