The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided that Center of Excellence (CoE) chief VVS Laxman will now attend every senior selection committee meeting. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed this on Tuesday. Its purpose is to ensure that there is no communication gap between the selectors and the Bengaluru-based CoE in information related to players’ fitness, injury and rehab.
Laxman recently participated in the T20 and India A selection meeting held in Guwahati. Now he will be a part of all the senior selection meetings to be held in future.
BCCI Secretary said- Accurate information is necessary to take the right decision
Saikia said that this decision was taken in the BCCI review meeting held in Mumbai. He said that Laxman is the Head of Cricket and CoE in BCCI. He has information related to players’ injuries, fitness and rehab. In such a situation, by his presence in every selection meeting, the selectors will be able to get accurate information about the availability of the players.
“Laxman will now attend all senior selection committee meetings so that there is no communication gap between the selectors and the CoE,” Saikia said.
Constant injuries to players are a matter of concern for BCCI.
Due to continuous injuries to players in the Indian team, availability has been affected. Recently, after the third ODI against West Indies, captain Shubman Gill had also expressed concern over this. He had said that due to injuries and busy schedule, the team is not able to play with the bowling line-up of its choice.
Gill had also said that the team does not have time to experiment much in preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The team wants that in the upcoming series, the combination which has the potential to play in the World Cup should get maximum opportunities.
Efforts for better coordination between injury management and selection
With Laxman regularly attending the selection meetings, information about the rehab and fitness programs of the players going on in the CoE will reach the selectors directly. With this, the team is expected to get more clear information while taking decisions regarding the availability of injured players and their selection.
