If the spelling of the name in your Aadhaar card is wrong, you want to change your surname after marriage or you want to change your full name, then now the rules have changed. UIDAI, the Aadhaar issuing body, has recently implemented new rules for correction and change in name.

According to the new rules, now for each type of change, separate government papers, forms or affidavits will have to be given. All work will not be done with a single document. To prevent fraud, UIDAI will closely examine all the documents submitted.

Understand the rule of 5 types of changes in name…

1. Document for minor correction in spelling

Correcting minor spelling mistakes in the name, adding or removing middle/last name and changing the order of the name will be considered as ‘minor name change’ (eg changing Ram to Rama). For this only a valid identity card will have to be given.

For children below 18 years of age, ‘Proof of Relationship’ will also be valid on the basis of the head of the family.

2. Correcting operator errors (data-entry errors)

If your documents were correct, but due to the operator’s mistake the name has been entered wrongly in Aadhaar, then an affidavit will have to be given to correct it. Proof of identity/relationship will be attached with Annexure B form for adults and Annexure C form for children. Keep in mind, the new name should match your old submitted documents, otherwise the request may be rejected.

3. Changing surname after marriage or divorce

To change the surname after marriage or divorce, an affidavit of Annexure D will have to be submitted along with the identity card. It has to be clarified that this change is only due to marriage or divorce. Registered marriage certificate will also be accepted as an alternative. After gender change, identity card will also have to be given for name change.

4. These mistakes will be corrected even without documents

No document will be required to correct random capital letters in the name (eg changing ‘RaMesh’ to ‘Ramesh’) or removing dots from the name. At the same time, an affidavit (Annexure E for adults and Annexure F for children) will be required to choose a name from ‘Akas’ or ‘Alias’. Adding military rank or position to the base is not allowed.

5. Gazette notification is necessary to change the full name.

If you are changing your full name or making a change that changes your identity, this will be considered a ‘Major Name Change’. For this, it is mandatory to give gazette notification of the central or state government and identity card. UIDAI will update it only after comparing the new name with the old records and checking the documents.
