Afghanistan has built a 121 kilometer long road to China’s Xinjiang through the Wakhan Corridor in north-eastern Badakhshan province. This road, built at a cost of about 55 lakh dollars, has also been inaugurated. This road is the first direct land route between Afghanistan and China. The Taliban government wants to transport its natural resources and gold mines to the Chinese market through this road. This can help it reduce its dependence on other countries and foreign companies. Amidst the tension with Pakistan, this route is also considered strategically important. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had said during his meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki that India is keeping an eye on the activities taking place in Wakhan. Mineral-connectivity route for China: Wakhan Corridor is important for China in terms of security and trade of Xinjiang. China has also built a new administrative corridor in this area this year. Through this route, China can get easy access to Afghanistan’s gold and other minerals. Apart from this, land route can also be available to the markets of Iran and Middle East. Why Wakhan Corridor is a matter of concern for India, near India’s claimed Gilgit-Baltistan. In such a situation, China’s increasing presence in this area is considered a matter of concern for India. This area is also close to Ladakh. Due to this, India may have to increase surveillance and security on the northern border. India will have to increase its strategic presence. According to defense expert NC Bipindra, the interests of China and Central Asia are linked in Wakhan. The importance of Wakhan has increased due to the tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan and the increasing presence of China in the region. According to him, India should strengthen its diplomatic and political presence by increasing contacts with Afghanistan and the countries of Central Asia. ———————————- Also read this news… India rejected Pak-China Border Commission: Said- Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India; Pakistan leaves illegal occupation; India rejects Pakistan-China Border Commission initiated in Islamabad.
