Delhi University (DU) has granted a one-time exemption from the 28-credit promotion requirement for undergraduate students enrolled in the 2025-26 academic session.
Under the existing credit-based system, students are required to earn 28 out of the 44 credits available in the first year to be eligible for promotion to the next academic year. With the latest decision, students from the 2025-26 batch will not be denied promotion solely because they have earned fewer than 28 credits.
What does the exemption mean for 2025-26 students?
The UGCF-2022, introduced as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, provides for 44 credits in an academic year.
Earlier, students who failed to secure at least 28 credits could face difficulties in being promoted to the next academic year. Under the one-time exemption, that specific credit threshold will not apply to the 2025-26 batch.
For instance, a student who has earned 27 credits after the first year will not be denied promotion solely for falling one credit short of the 28-credit requirement.
Other academic rules remain unchanged
The exemption does not mean that DU has abolished its examination, assessment or other promotion requirements.
The university has only waived the requirement of securing at least 28 of the 44 first-year credits for the 2025-26 batch. Other provisions notified by DU in July and September 2025 will continue to apply.
The relaxation is also not a permanent change to the 28-credit rule. It is a one-time exemption specifically for students enrolled in the 2025-26 academic session. Students admitted in subsequent batches will not automatically be eligible for the same exemption.
DU had changed the rule earlier
The 28-credit promotion requirement was introduced by DU in July 2025. In September 2025, the university revised the implementation timeline, making the requirement applicable to students enrolling in the 2025-26 academic session.
The latest decision therefore does not abolish the 28-credit rule. Instead, it provides a one-time relaxation for the 2025-26 batch.
