Following the death of a senior citizen during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) October 2 protest in Mumbai, the Shivaji Park Citizens Forum has demanded that a murder case be registered against Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the satirical movement.
The forum has urged authorities to take action against Dipke in connection with the death. Separately, Mumbai Police have registered a case against the organisers of the protest and 400-500 unidentified participants.
CJP Protest Organisers Booked
According to police, the FIR was registered at Shivaji Park police station under Sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, PTI reported.
The cases stem from a protest organised by CJP activists and other civil society groups at Shivaji Park against the Election Commission and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Earlier, advocate and Shivaji Park resident Siddhi Deolekar had complained to the police against CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh, alleging that they went ahead with the gathering despite permission being denied.
In a post on X, Deolekar said the complaint was against the CJP leaders for allegedly attempting to hold the protest and mobilising a large crowd despite restrictions.
“As a responsible Shivaji Park citizen, I have lodged a complaint against @abhijeet_dipke, @AshutoshRanka, @Saurav Dassss and @whattalawyer at Shivaji Park Police Station for allegedly attempting to proceed with the Shivaji Park Protest and gathering a huge crowd despite express denial of permission and the restrictions flowing from the Hon’ble Bombay High Court’s judgment in PIL 116/2009 dated 04.01.2013 and the subsequent Maharashtra Government order,” she said.
Speaking to ANI, Deolekar alleged that the gathering amounted to a violation of the law.
“This is not ‘peaceful protest’. This is an attempt to defy the law under the cover of a political protest,” she said.
